Judson DeVerger and Nellie Marie (Cope) DeVerger had these children-Rick DeVerger, Deborah DeVerger, and Liasa DeVerger. --------------- Nellie Marie (Cope) DeVerger's husband Judson Carl DeVerger's obituary - Judson Carl DeVerger, 90, died at 1:30 a.m., Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the Calhoun Nursing & Rehab Center in Hardin after a long battle with dementia. He was born at the family home place in Richwood Township, in rural Jersey County on Jan. 21, 1927, and was the youngest child born to Howard and Daisy Mae (Gray) DeVerger Sr. Judson began life on the family farm and continued grain and livestock farming throughout his entire life. He graduated from Hardin High School, and as a young man worked many side jobs as well, picking up and selling pecans, guiding fisherman and hunters alongside the river bottoms, and was instrumental in the rural electrification program, thus providing electric lines to the countryside. His Christian faith was dear to him, and he was a longtime and supportive member of the Hardin Presbyterian Church. He has served as an Elder and participated on committees too numerous to mention. Like his father, he was a member of the Calhoun Masonic Lodge #792, and was proud that his son was a member as well. In his younger years, Judson influenced many young men, serving as a Boy Scout leader. Judson was a man with many interests, but nothing surpassed his love and concern for his family. He passed on to them his love of traveling, with Colorado being his top spot. As a young man, he traveled to Colorado and fell in love with the mountains, and returned there almost every summer with his family, and eventually purchased a cabin near Buena Vista more than forty years ago. Throughout their lives, they and their families have enjoyed many occasions surrounded by the love of family and the Colorado high mountains. Although Judson didn't possess any prestigious degrees or accolades, he was certainly a man that was blessed, and possessed a great deal of intelligence. He had an uncanny knack for knowing just the right thing to do, at the very right time, in order to provide he and his family with a nice living. He was well versed on many subjects, and loved to converse with anyone. Luckily for the rest of us, he was able to add the trait of humility, kindness and generosity to his daily life. He was a good man, with solid substance, and has been, and will be missed continuously. He married the former Nellie Marie Cope on Jan. 5, 1948 at the Fieldon United Church of Christ, and together, the two have been blessed with nearly 70 years of marriage, shared the joys of raising their 3 children and the blessings that their 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren have brought to them. Surviving are his wife, Nellie DeVerger of Fieldon; a son and daughter in-law, Rick and Mary DeVeger of Fieldon; two daughters and a son in-law, Debbie DeVerger of Grafton and Lisa and Roger Snider of Fieldon; four grandchildren, Brian DeVerger and his wife, Marcia of Fieldon, Darin DeVerger, and his fiance' April Loy of Jerseyville, Brandyn Snider and Adrienne Snider both of Fieldon; a great grandson, Christian DeVerger of Columbia, Mo., and Kyah DeVerger of Jerseyville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude DeVerger who was killed in action during World War II on Aug. 12, 1943 and Howard "June" DeVerger Jr. on Nov. 1, 2008; and his only sister, Eva Margaret Tucker, who died exactly three years to the date of Judson, on Nov. 19, 2014. Visitation for family and friend will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Calhoun Masonic Lodge #792 will conclude the evening visitation at with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. Saturday until time of funeral services at 10 a.m., at the Hardin Presbyterian Church in Hardin, Illinois. Rev. Paull Frazier will officiate. He will be laid to rest in the Fieldon Cemetery. He died 15th of July, 1940 in Manistee, Michigan. His weight was 490 pounds, his height was 8' 11.1". He was buried July 19, 1940 in Upper Alton Cemetery, Alton, Madison Co., IL. His height of 8' 11.1" qualifies him as the tallest person in history, as recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. At the time of his death he weighed 490 pounds. Robert was born on February 22, 1918, and weighed a normal eight pounds, six ounces. He drew attention to himself when at six months old, he weighed 30 pounds. A year later at 18 months, he weighed 62 pounds. He continued to grow at an astounding rate, reaching six feet, two inches and 195 pounds by the time he was eight years old. Between 1920 and 1926 the family lived in Roxana, IL. His middle name, Pershing, was in honor of the World War I General Pershing, then commanding officer of the European conflict. Robert was the first born of Addie and Harold Wadlow. Later the Wadlow family grew with the addition of two sisters, Helen and Betty, and two brothers, Eugene and Harold Jr. Despite Robert's size, all of his family members were of normal height and weight. Trying to maintain a normal life, Robert enjoyed collecting stamps, photography, and become the world's tallest Boy Scout at seven feet, four inches, when he was 13 years of age. Later he became a member of DeMolay and the Masons. At age 18, he had reached eight feet, four inches tall, and weighed 390 pounds. His clothing required three times the normal amount of cloth, and his size 37 shoes cost $100.00 a pair (a lot of money back in the 1930's). Two years later his shoes were provided free by the International Shoe Company. When he turned 20 Robert traveled for the shoe company, visiting over 800 towns and 41 states. His father had to modify the family car, removing the front passenger seat so Robert could sit in the back seat and stretch out his long legs. The father and son team traveled over 300,000 miles on their goodwill tour for the shoe company. He established his place in the history books when he exceeded eight feet, four inches in 1937, surpassing the record previously held by an Irishman who died in 1877. Robert was very fond of his mother Addie, and there was a quiet manner about him that earned him the title 'Gentle Giant'. Robert's unique size was attributed to an over active pituary gland, which produced much higher than normal levels of growth hormone. Today's medical science can compensate for such problems - but in the 1920s there was no therapy available. As a youth, Robert had enjoyed good health, but his large feet had troubled him for many years. He had little sensation in his feet and did not feel any chafing until blisters formed. While making an appearance in Manistee, Michigan in July 1940, a fatal infection set in when such a blister formed. On July 4th, doctors had Robert confined to a hotel bed, unable to find suitable accommodations at the local hospital. Days later, after emergency surgery and blood transfusions, the infection lingered and his temperature continued to rise. At 1:30 a.m., on the 15th of July, Robert Wadlow passed away in his sleep. Robert's body was brought back to his home town of Alton for burial. The 1,000-pound casket required a dozen pallbearers, assisted by eight other men. Out of respect for Alton's Gentle Giant, all city businesses closed for the funeral. Over 40,000 people signed the guest register. Robert's gravestone simply reads "At Rest." Robert Wadlow holds a special place in Alton's history. He is remembered as a quiet young man who overcame a unique handicap, and who was an inspiration to all of those that knew him. In 1984 a citizens committee organized efforts to immortalize Robert, and in 1985 a bronze statue was erected on the campus of the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine on College Avenue in Alton IL. Note: The above information about Robert Wadlow I found at this website at- http://www.altonweb.com/history/wadlow/ ---------------- Note: I found the information below about Robert Wadlow from- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Wadlow Robert Pershing Wadlow, Born February 22, 1918 Alton, Illinois, United States. Died July 15, 1940 (aged 22) in Manistee, Michigan, United States. Other names Alton Giant, Gentle Giant; Height 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m); Weight 490 lb (220 kg). Known for Tallest verified human being. Parents Harold Franklin Wadlow and Addie Johnson. This article is about the tallest man in recorded history. For the tallest man alive, see Sultan Kösen. Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 to July 15, 1940) was a man who is the tallest person in history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. Wadlow is sometimes known as the Alton Giant or Giant of Illinois because of his upbringing in Alton, Illinois. Wadlow reached 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) in height and weighed 485 lb (220 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood was due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death. Wadlow's size began to take its toll: he required leg braces to walk, and had little feeling in his legs and feet. Despite these encounters, Wadlow was never confined to a wheelchair. On June 27, 1940 (eighteen days before his death), he was measured at 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) by doctors C. M. Charles and Cyril MacBryde of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Wadlow was an American celebrity; he was well-known due to his 1936 U.S. tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus and his 1938 promotional tour with the INTERCO. He continued participating in tours and public appearances. Wadlow was a Freemason. In 1939, he petitioned Franklin Lodge #25 in Alton, Illinois and in late November, 1939 and was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Illinois A.F & A. M. On July 4, 1940, while making a professional appearance at the National Forest Festival, a faulty brace irritated his ankle, causing a blister and subsequent infection. Doctors treated him with a blood transfusion and emergency surgery, but his condition worsened and on July 15, 1940, he died in his sleep. He was 22. An estimated 40,000 people attended Wadlow's funeral on July 19. He was buried in a half-ton coffin that required twelve pallbearers to carry, which was interred within a vault of solid concrete. It was believed that Wadlow's family were concerned for the sanctity of his body after his death, and went to these lengths of security to ensure it would never be disturbed or stolen. In 1985, a life-size bronze statue of Wadlow by Ned Giberson was erected at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Dental Medicine. He is featured in film and with a wax replica in the Ripley's Believe It Or Not! museum in Saint Augustine, Florida; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Niagara Falls, Ontario; Gold Coast, Queensland; and Guadalajara, Mexico. A life-sized statue was part of the exhibits at the Guinness Hall of World Records in the Empire State Building in New York City. Wadlow has been the topic of many songs throughout the years. The 1998 song "The Giant of Illinois," by the Handsome Family (and later covered by Andrew Bird) honors Wadlow. In 2005 Sufjan Stevens recorded "The Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders" about Wadlow for the Illinois album. --------------- (2aa) Sherman Sylvester Wadlow and Nettie Delight (White) Wadlow's son Walter Leslie Wadlow was born 13 Dec 1891, and died 7 Nov 1965.
