September Sunset (Hairwing Variant) was tied by contributing fly tyer, Scott Howell. He has also tied a tube variation of this fly, (which see). See his notes about this fly below. Tube flies are beginning to see more popularity in the Northwest as tiers are finding them highly effective. You can see more of Scott Howell's flies at The Flies of Scott Howell.
SCOTT HOWELL'S NOTE(S): This colorful fly was the invention of John Smerlaglio of Maupin, Oregon - a well-known guide and contract tyer for Umpqua Feather Merchants. John's original 'Sunset', with it's elegant Spey-like profile and Golden Pheasant wing, has accounted for many Steelhead in the Deschutes Canyon area and is fast growing in popularity throughout the Northwest.
