I've updated the title of this page to reflect my first tentative baby-steps into film. At any rate, I am an actor of some talent, and a sound designer of extensive experience. I've also done a little directing in my life. But I consider myself primarily a sound designer.
I have directed two studio plays; Tender Offer, by Wendy Wasserstein, and The Person I Once Was, by Cindy Lou Johnson. Both plays were well-received, and a fun experience for me and my ensemble.
As a sound designer, I have worked on the university level in both studio and mainstage, the professional level, and internationally. Highlights of my career are Kafka's Metamorphosis, for Anchorage's only professional theatre company, Eccentric Theatre Productions (ETC), Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost, for the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and Sam Shepard's Fool For Love, for the Khabarovsk Regional Theatre for Young Audiences.
There are a lot of theatre resources on the web. Rather than site them all, I am instead providing something that is sorely necessary; a list of graduate schools and educational opportunities for sound designers. For undergraduates, I can only recommend the university I received my bachelor's degree in; the University of Alaska, Anchorage. There, student designers can expect a chance to design for the mainstage. Directors-in-training have a chance to direct a show, with the Directing program. If you're focusing on acting, you will find a place on the mainstage eventually (just keep trying). Although they do not currently offer formal education in sound design, it's where I got my start. If you're a sound designer, you'll find a home there.
But in my searchings, I'm finding it difficult to locate a school that offers a Masters in Sound Design. I realize others may be having the same problem, so I hope to provide a service to them. This list shows the school that offers the training and the degree they offer. Clicking on the school name will take you to their home page.
