Benefit Concert held by Vickey Lyn
Vickey Lyn

I met Vickey Lyn in the fall of 1998 at the Antique Sandwich Company.
Little had I known then how important her life would be to my own.

Vickey Lyn is a very dynamic individual, whose songwriting truly captures the essence of what folk music is about.  She is a wonderful storyteller, documenting, in music, stories of generations of her own family.  Some include poetry her mother has written.  Some describe the struggles of the spirit.  Sometimes, the songs change from one hearing to the next, reminiscent of a story teller.  But all her songs contain something profound that I cannot forget.

Her guitar accompaniment, on first hearing, sounds simple, but upon closer inspection, some of her songs contain tempo changes that I have found to be more of a "Vickey Lyn trademark."  I can't tell you how much I love 5/4 time.  Since I was a kid, I always had.  Upon first hearing Vickey Lyn's "Moon Dancing" song, I went wild and crazy inside.  She starts out with a very standard 4/4 time, but every now and then, she slips in the 5/4 time.  I have envied her since.  As the dedicated songwriter that I am, I think that it is important to expand one's songwriting abilities.  Both Vickey Lyn's storytelling and music writing definitely has impacted my own writing abilities.  Not to mention I have written a few songs for her, too.

Vickey Lyn is one of my very best friends these days.  We look to each other for guidance and comfort, sometimes even advice (something both of us have a hard time accepting sometimes, being the quiet rebels that we are--ha ha.)  She is a courageous and sometimes outrageous woman who has taught me alot about perseverance and dedication, friendship and trust.  I love her and value her friendship dearly.  Also her cooking.  But, that's another story all it's own.
