FEBRUARY 28th 1999Alan Stubbs looks to have played his last game for Celtic. Aston Villa appear likely to secure his services later this week and the figure is expected to be around £5 million.
This is a backward step for Celtic, the move will represent the most significant player loss in recent years eclipsing the departures of Cadete, Di Canio and Van Hooydonk.Celtic are beginning to sail into troubled waters, the imminent departure of Stubbs appears likely to be a prologue to further departures of other quality players in coming months. Simon Donnelly appears certain to leave on a free at the end of season with Phil O'Donnell likely to take that option also. Celtic fans are also becoming increasingly nervous over rumours that their hero Henrik Larsson may also be leaving sooner rather than later. The Swede has decided to not hold contract extension talks with Celtic until the end of the season, significantly after Sweden meet England at Wembley. This is surely very best of shopwindows should a player be interested in a move to the English Premiership.
