Celtic have finally appointed their new head coach, Slovakian Dr Jozef Venglos. Venglos has moved to Glasgow from his position as coaching advisor to FIFA so it appears that Celtic may have found a coach of some quality. Unfortunately the Celtic faithful were none to impressed with the appointment of the former Aston Villa manager who has been branded by the local press as 'Dr Who ?'. There were unfortunate scenes as Dr Jo was paraded outside Celtic Park with fans appearing more eager to express their anger at Jock Brown and the board. The official announcement from Celtic Park was as follows: Celtic Football Club today (17/7/98), announced the appointment of Jozef Venglos as Head Coach on a three year deal. Slovakian Jozef Venglos(62) has a wealth of coaching experience at the highest level, having coached in a number of countries, twice winning the Czechoslovakian Championship with Slovan Bratislava, as well as being runner-up in the Cup Winners Cup. An international midfield player for Czechoslovakia, he has also coached the national teams of Australia, Malaysia, Oman, Slovakia and Czechosolvakia. Jozef has won the European Championships at under 23 level and, arguably his finest moment in coaching, the full European Championship with Czechoslovakia in 1976, beating Holland in the semi-finals and West Germany in the Final, as well as reaching the quarter finals of the Italia '90 World Cup. Currently coaching adviser to FIFA, and Technical Director to Slovan Bratislava, Jozef has a Doctorate in Physical Education as well as specialising in Psychology. He speaks four languages and has co-ordinated FIFA study groups at the World Cup in 1986 Mexico, 1994 USA and France 1998. Jozef was appointed President of the European Coaches Union in 1995 as well as being chosen to coach European and World select teams in the 80's and 90's. He has also coached Sporting Lisbon(83-84), Aston Villa(90-91) and Fenerbahce(91-93). Jozef Venglos has been selected by FIFA on various occasions to lecture at the FIFA Academies throughout the world in countries including Malta, Cyprus, Iraq, Bermuda, Mauritius, South Korea, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia and Holland. Fergus McCann, Managing Director comments, "Jozef Venglos has a wealth of experience and knowledge of coaching which is difficult to match in World football. He knows what it takes to win at the highest level, winning Leagues and Cups at national level and the European Championships at international level as well as taking Czechoslovakia to the World Cup quarter finals in Italia '90. The process we have gone through has involved talking to many people. It has been an in depth search and at the end of it we have an intelligent man with a mature attitude and a knowledge of playing and coaching at the highest level. Part of Jozef's brief is also to identify and groom a successor. I believe that Jozef will not only take the first team forward, but will ensure the entire coaching set up throughout the Club has a strong foundation for many years to come." Jock Brown, Football General Manager remarks, "It has been an intensive search involving speaking with many people in many countries. The name of Jozef Venglos comes with the highest reputation among the world's most knowledgeable football coaches. I am delighted he has agreed to join Celtic." Jozef Venglos comments, "I could not resist the offer of the opportunity to coach a club that is embedded in world soccer history. The chance to work with 13 international players in one of Europe's finest football arenas with 60,000 supporters and so much potential still to achieve is an opportunity and challenge I relish. I have recently been offered the position of coach with a national side, but the Celtic job is the one I want and I am delighted to get it." Until the formalities of Jozef's work permit are completed, he will be operating at the Club in a consultancy capacity.
