One summer many years ago in Poland I was stunned by the magnificent city of Krakow. However a local student informed me that the authorities had too noticed the cities beauty and felt that in a nation of ‘equals’ that such beauty was unfair. The government decided to locate the mass of their chemical plants around the city to ‘even things up’ so to speak.

Sometimes I think being a Celtic fan is a little bit like living in Krakow, we support a team that has always played more attractive football than our rivals, politically we have always been more astute, ideals, principles and justice above success at any cost. The cost of our luxuries have been great, as a Celtic fans we have endured 9 seasons of defeat, despondency sometimes humiliation, we have endured injustice and felt downtrodden but always we have remained “faithful through and through.”

Saturday afternoon was the reward for our loyalty, yet it seems we are not allowed to remain happy for long. Celtic have announced the resignation of Wim Jansen the man who lead Celtic to the Promised Land to find the Holy Grail. However the powers that be have allowed him to leave leaving Celtic effectively crucified once again.

The talk is that Mick McCarthy will take over the hotseat, I assume he has undergone intensive personality tests by Messrs Brown and McCann in order that we can retain him for a bit longer than one season, or are we to become the Manchester City of Scottish football. Let us be clear about one thing, McCarthy is an enormous backward step, Jansen has begun to transform Celtic, remarkably a championship has been won in this season of revolution. Had ten-in-a-row not been an issue the transformation of Celtic into possible contenders on larger stages could perhaps have superseded even the championship.

The blame cannot be laid solely at the door of Fergus McCann and Jock Brown, Wim is a grown up, he was a highly paid professional who had the respect of tens of thousands of Celtic fans, to leave over issues of managerial relationships is farcical and frankly defies belief. We all work with disagreeable people, but we get on with it, the fact Wim has seen fit to put his relationship with Jock Brown ahead of the 50,000 disciples who worshiped his name on Saturday is disappointing in the extreme.

Again Celtic must learn lessons from this, a shrewd appointment is required, I don’t believe the faithful will be appeased by McCarthy. Money must be made available to a quality coach in order to prevent ourselves falling at the same hurdle the huns fell at last season in Europe.

On Saturday Celtic did stride into the promised land, I only hope our board don’t shepherd us back to "from whence we came."
