Title: Prevention of primary liver cancer by immunization.(Editorial)
   Author: Arie J. Zuckerman

Abstract: Universal vaccination against hepatitis B may reduce the incidence
of hepatocellular carcinoma. This is most common type of liver cancer and it
has been linked to chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus.
Hepatocellular carcinoma is common in Southeast Asia and several other
developing countries. A 1997 study found that vaccination of all Taiwanese
children in the 1980's led to a 50% reduction in the average annual incidence
of hepatocellular carcinoma by 1994. The World Health Organization recommends
universal hepatitis B vaccination of all infants.
