Understaffed,
the military nurses
fight through exhaustion
...the shock of seeing
a constant stream
of violated flesh.
They work fourteen hour days,
their uniforms soaked
with the blood of the wounded,
dismembered, the dying.
One day, a field hospital
on the fringe
of the battle zone,
came under artillery attack,
...it happens.
As shrapnel tore through
the canvas tent,
a nurse, without hesitation,
threw herself over
the wounded soldier
she had been attending.
The soldier she shielded
later said
...she reeked of exhaustion,
sweat and tension,
but to me,
she smelled like the rose
of Heaven.
When she lifted her face,
she brushed my cheek,
it was as if I had been touched
by an angel.
She looked into my eyes.
I saw a beauty,
I cannot describe;
a luminous...something.
I didn't know what it was,
just...that it was there.

How many times
does she cradle
their shattered bodies
in aching arms?
How many times
does she suffer their pain?
We die only once.
How many times
...does she die?
