This was another English assignment, this time for college...write about a nightmare you've had. Since I have disturbing, usually violent nightmares on a regular basis, subject matter was at least easy to come by. This is when I dreamt about the end of the world. More or less.
Fire fell from an unholy sky,
pelting the unforgiven ground.
Chaos beating, screaming,
echoing through molten hills and
scarring the tattered landscape
with a leper's sores.
The land wailed, cried, and with it
her people withered and died,
spilling the burnt, acrid taste of their blood
into the soiled cracks of her body,
tainting her with the charred ashes of the fallen.
Like dumb beasts they stampeded, safety sought,
and in the midst of flame stood I, their Saviour--
by all Hell's fury flanked, and wounded, I,
blood mixed with fire on my marred disfigured face,
despair and terror mingling where desparation reigned--
I could not make it end.
