Chapter 5

Nick decided to take Rami out for a little stargazing that night. Nick covered her eyes as they were slowly climbing up the hill. Rami said, "Nick!! I can't see a thing!!! What are you doing?"

"Just wait a second," Nick said. When they got up to the top, Nick uncovered her eyes. "Well, what do you think of this?" Rami looked up and stood there in silence with Nick.

"Oh my gosh," Rami whispered. Nick said,

"Alya and I used to do this all the time before she died. Now, I'm sharing it with you. Pretty cool, huh?"

"This is amazing," Rami replied. She started to shiver.

"Are you cold?" Nick asked.

"A little. I forgot to take my windbreaker before I left," Rami answered. Nick took his jacket off and put it on her. He said,

"You can wear this for a while."

He kissed her.

They sat down on the grass together and kept staring at the sky. "Whenever times got rough for me back home, I would just look up at the stars, and pray to God all the time," Rami said as she looked up. Nick looked at her and said,

"Things were really rough for you, huh?"

"Oh yeah. I kept getting depressed at school all the time. At first, I had no feelings inside of me. But then, the pain started to settle inside my body. And it ached a lot." Nick said,

"Didn't you have any friends to turn to?" Rami said,

"Not one. No one realized what was going on in my life, so I didn't have the guts to tell anyone. I've also tried running away, which didn't really help at all because most kids would call my dad and tell him where I was. I wanted to die, Nick. It was the most uncomfortable time I had to face..." Rami stopped short. Then, a tear went down her cheek. Nick put his arm around her. "Rami, listen to me. I'm here for you, okay? I won't let anything happen to you, ever. I promise." Rami smiled even though she was sobbing. Nick just held on to her until she could control herself. He then said, "I love you. I always will."

It was now 6:00 in the morning. The sky was now gray and cloudy, and no longer clear. Rami felt a light shake on her shoulder, but she shrugged it off. Nick leaned over to her and whispered, "Rami, come on. You gotta get up." Rami was still asleep so she mumered,

"Come on, Nin. 5 more minutes, okay?"

"Rami, wake up!!!" Rami fluttered open her eyes, and saw Nick.

"Ooops. Uh.. sorry about that. What time is it??"

"No, it's 6:00 in the morning. We've been here all night!! We have got to go!!" Nick said. Rami checked her watch, and jumped up, and ran while Nick ran after her. "Rami!!! Slow down, girl!! Wait up!!!!" Nick yelled out. As Rami got home, she slowly opened her door and silently crept up to her room. As she opened her door, Nina was standing in front of her, and she wasn't happy. "Where the heck were you?!" Nina yelled. "Do u have any idea what time it is?!" Rami stuttered,

"I'm sorry...." Nina said,

"Where were you?!" for the second time. Rami opened her mouth twice, but couldn't make out anything. She then said,

"I was hanging out with Nick, and I..well we both lost track of time and fell asleep, so now....uh....well.....Look, it's not my fault for being late!!! What did u expect from me?!"

"I expected you to be home on time!!!!!! But you weren't!!!!! You know what?! I trusted you to be here, and you break that trust!!" Rami was getting angry with her, so she had so much steam built up inside her. She couldn't take it anymore, so she yelled out a really bad curse word. Rami then felt a slight pain throw her off a little. She then realized that Nina snapped and had punched her in the eye. Nina freaked out. "Rami, I'm sorry....I'm sorry. I snapped..I didn't mean to..." Rami broke out into a run, and ran out of her house.

Rami was running out of breath, and decided to give up and go to the beach. As she sat on the sand, she watched as the waves crashed onto the land. Then, the rain began to come down. It came down light at first, but then the downpours developed, getting Rami wet. "God must be upset today," Rami thought to hereslf as she felt a tear come down. But she wiped it away, and felt anger and sadness again. It was now 10:00. Nina had left for work, so Rami decided to hang out somewhere. She went in the back to Nick's house. She knocked on the screen door near on porch, but there was no answer. After a while, she heard footsteps. She let her hair down and covered her now black and blue eye. Nick opened the door, and saw her. "Rami!. What are you doing here?"

"You don't want to know," Rami mumbled as she sat down on the steps. Nick looked at her.

"Are you okay?" Nick asked suspiciously.

"You look sick." He sat down next to her and stroked her hair. Rami said,

"I'm fine. I just need to be alone, and with you for a while..."

"What happened to your eye?" Nick said as he looked at her face. Rami sighed and said,

"Like I said, You don't want to know."

"You bet I want to know. How did this happen?" Nick asked. Rami went inside with him and told the story of her arguement after that night. Nick went over to freezer and listened to Rami as she was laying on the couch. He then said, "Well, she'll get over it later on. I mean, it wasn't entirely your fault, ya know? I should have came with you. Then it would have been straightened out right away." Rami just put her head on the couch, and layed her face down on it. Nick yelled from the kitchen, "I don't have any ice, so you're gonna have to bare with me." Rami said,

"You don't have anything cold??"

"Yeah, I do. I only have a frozen pizza, and that's about it. No, I'm kidding. I have ice, don't worry." He walked over with a towel which contained the ice in it. Rami said,

"Thanks," and put it on her eye. She winced a little bit, but smiled slightly. She then said, "You care a lot about other people don't you?"

"Yeah, I used to help my dad at this senior citizens center, and it taught me a lot about helping and caring for other people I know and don't know."

"You did care a lot about Alya," Rami said.

"Yeah, I did," Nick muttered. Rami said,

"Oh man, I'm sorry..."

"No, no it's okay. I'm fine. I'm moving on, and I really like you...." Nick stopped short. Rami sat up.

"I'm sorry...? You like me?" Nick blushed, and then said,

"Yeah, I do."

"You mean as in a friend?"

"Well, in another way.."

"You mean as in....oh gosh!" Nick sat there for a second. Rami smiled and said,

"Why didn't you tell me before???"

"I didn't know what to say," Nick said. He then said,

"But I will confess. I do like you. And I want to be more than just friends. You've made me a better person for who I am, not for what I am." Rami hugged and kissed him and said,

"That's the most flattering thing I've ever heard from you."

"I'm glad I made your day." Nick said shyly.
