Legal Research Map For Clients Representing Themselves
The first step in representing yourself, or going "pro se" as it's called in the legal profession, is knowing your rights under your state's welfare laws. We can't emphasize this enough. An informed client is a powerful client. You'll be surprised what you might find: rules you didn't know existed, rules never mentioned to you, rules that the administrators of your local office don't know. Every state maintains a state legislature home page, which has a gateway link to the state's legal archives. All state laws can be accessed through these web sites. Our advice about doing legal research is: Allow a good amount of time because it often takes awhile to find what you're looking for. Be patient, it's sometimes a tedious process, and be sure to save all relevant info that you do find to your C and floppy drives.
WE DON'T HAVE ALL 50 STATES YET
We decided to get the map up and running with the states we already have done, rather than waiting until it was completed. Here's a list of the states we do have:
Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Maryland
The map takes 1 min. to download on a 56K modem, probably about 2 min. on a 28.8.
