Character Description
It is not exactly a documented fact in the series as to when Darla was created, but it is estimated that it occurred over 400 years ago. Which would make it during the 17th century sometime, maybe earlier. What Darla was before becoming a vampire is also unknown, but personally, I can picture her as a maidservant working for some pig, or Nobel, whom she not doubt killed upon becoming a vampire.

Darla made her first appearance in the very first scene of the first episode of the first season (seeing a pattern here?) of Buffy The Vampire Slayer in which, she also made the first kill of the show. She also made, (Wait for it) quite a first impression, dressed in a catholic girls school uniform, she gave way to sweetness, despite the fact that she was vampire. The first vampire we see in Sunnydale, who kills an unnamed character in the school halls of Sunnydale High, in the episode: Welcome to the Hellmouth.

Darla's role was small at first, but she made a lasting impression which would give way to fans wanting to see more of her. Darla was the one who caught Jessie, Xander and Willows other friend, she was also the first one to come face to face with the slayer and let Buffy show us how she fights. It should also be known that Darla was part of the Masters Coven, meaning that he most likely was her Sire and she was also one of his favourite. Darla, does not seem as strong as most vampires, but this could come from the sweetness she displays in the way she talks and acts. But she did survive her first run in with the slayer, though that was thanks to a little intervention by a vampire named Luke, a very large fellow.

In Darla's short appearance in the first season, she attacked and had a little munch on Buffy's mum, killed the Three, and went on to reveal the greatest bit of information there was to know in Episode 8: Angel, and that was, that she was Angel's Sire. During the 18th century, Darla turned a 27 year old Irish lout named Liam, who enjoyed nothing more then drinking, fighting and flirting with woman, into the vampire, who she named, Angelus, "The one with the Angelic Face". Although it is not clear, Darla believed she was in love with him, which she revealed in Angel by saying, "You don't know how hard it is to love someone who used to love you."

Darla and Angelus caused quite some damage through out their time together, but the extent is not specified, but we do know that Angel was quite treacherous. Darla though is also the one responsible for Angelus obtaining his soul, although, it was not something planned. Darla was the one who brought the gypsy girl to Angel, which inevitably led to his soul been returned as punishment for killing her. In turn, Angel returned home and Darla, sensing something wrong in him, recognised that he had a soul, a thing that was considered evil/dirty to a vampire, and threw him out of her life.

Darla stayed with the Master after throwing Angel out, and after a hundred years or so, she met up with him once again in Sunnydale, although he was soul riddled. At this point, we discovered what Darla's greatest strength was, and that was her power over Angel. Darla is able to manipulate him, to confuse him and guide him using guilt to do what she wants him to do. This was evident in how she managed to convince soul boy Angel to want to kill Buffy, it worked to a point, for Angel did attack Buffy in one of the best fight sequences, but evidently it failed, and Darla stepped in.

This fight between Darla and Buffy, although great, ended in tragedy, that's right, Darla was turned to dust, but not by the slayer, her demise came at the hands of Angel, who staked her from behind. Yet in this death, Darla proved that it is possible for vampires to have feelings even though they have no soul. For when Darla was staked, she turned to see Angel and the hurt and pain of a broken heart was evident in her eyes and how she spoke his name, before been turned to dust.

Darla was not out of Angels life though, she has haunted him through out the season in his dreams, causing him to relive his past. She has been particularly prominent in season 1 of Angel, through flashbacks of his past. Of course, then came the greatest moment in the entire series, that's right, the season finale of Angel ended with Darla been brought back from hell, naked, cold, shivering, confused and afraid in a cage. We might not know what is planned for season 2, but one thing's for sure, Darla is going to continue to haunt angel, and leave an impression on the fans, and only time will tell what she will be up to.
