Karjam
I met Karjam in September, 2000 when his music and dance troupe came to the Andong Mask Dance Festival. We kept in touch, and I went to visit him in Tibet in July, 2001.
We met in Xiahe, because Lonely Planet made it sound like a place I'd be willing to wait a few days, if I arrived early or he arrived late. It was only a few hours from where he lives now, a town called Hezuo, which is the county seat for the area. He took me to Ahwensung, where the photos below were taken as he reunited with all his hometown friends.
Here is Karjam with his mom, who, like all the rest of his family, lives as a nomad outside of Ahwensung.
These are what I call "PBD" camera shots. (Push the Button, Dummy). Normally I would not post any PBD shot on here, this page being reserved for my good shots, but for the sake of showing you, I will temporarily post these photos.

That's me, "camping" in the grasslands outside Machu. I even got to see a shooting star. Unfortunately having found my camp spot long after dark, without a flashlight, it was far from level and I continually slid down into the dew zone. In the morning I celebrated the beauty of waking up to bird song in a field of flowers by rolling through them, covering myself in dew, grass seeds and petals. |
This is Karjam in his room. That's all there is. Behind me is the door. There is a washbasin and a mirror on the wall. A table with boxes under it to store things. The couch is covered by towels to protect the cushions. The bed has no mattress, just a folded blanket over a wooden shelf. There are no cooking facilities and the bathroom is three holes in a concrete floor of a building about 100 meters behind the building he lives in. |
