I have not added the photo of the novice above to the Labrang Monastery page because he is from the Red Hat sect, and Labrang is a Yellow Hat monastery. There was one smaller red hat monastery in Xiahe and this novice, still very much a boy, as you can see, was an irresistible photo opportunity for me.

Here you can see how the region looked around Xiahe. This is a Tibetan village on the outskirts of Xiahe proper. The valley floor is fertile farmland, and the hills are spare and steep. The houses, made of brick and earth, blend with the land. |
