The coyote lies in a bed of soft cotton because he leaned up against a cactus and stuck his hide with sharp needles.

The coyote is known for mischief and the Indians called the animal the trickster. The animal is not as vicious as his cousin, the wolf, even though he chases the poor little roadrunner.

The cactus may appear to serve no purpose but it provides moisture and food to desert creatures, as well as a comfortable habitat. Just beware the sharp needles, which protect its precious flowers. Cactus flowers only bloom at special times during the year.

Cotton is one of Arizona's most important farm products. Look at the label on your clothes. You may be wearing it now.
