The Bon Marche

Northgate Mall (Seattle)

The Northgate Bon Marche store opened in 1949 while Northgate Mall was still under construction. The mall opened in 1950 and was one of the first if not the first regional shopping center ever built. Like other early regional shopping centers, Northgate was originally an open air mall. The mall was covered in the mid 1960s and expanded to include J C Penney and Nordstrom department stores. The Northgate Bon store was expanded about the time that the mall was covered. Finally the mall was totally enclosed in the mid-1970s. Nordstrom expanded its store to three stories and installed escalators.

This photograph was taken in 2003 facing west across 5th Avenue NE.
