The Sam Hill Bridge opened to traffic in 1962. This bridge was operated as a toll bridge until the bonds were paid off in, if I remember correctly, the late 1970s. US 97 has always crossed this bridge. Before the bridge was built, a ferry connected Biggs and Maryhill.
Sam Hill built the nearby Maryhill Museum and Stonehenge replica. Mr Hill, son-in-law to Great Northern Railway founder James Hill, had been the leader of the good roads movement in Washington State in the early 20th century. According to WSDOT records, the bridge was named the Sam Hill Memorial Bridge at a ceremony on June 19, 1964.
This photograph was taken in September 2002 with Oregon in the foreground.
