Meier & Frank was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1857. The first phase of the present downtown store was completed circa 1910. Two later phases were completed by the early 1930s. The building covers a full block and has 15 stories plus two basements. At this time (April 2005) nine stories are used for retail.
Meier and Frank was purchased by the May Company around 1965. The May Company, in turn, might merge with Federated Deparment Stores. If the Federated-May Company merger goes through, Meier & Frank will probably be rebranded as Macy's in 2006. Future plans for the downtown Portland Meier & Frank call for consolidating the store on the first five stories and for converting the upper ten stories to a hotel.
