When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in January 1964, SR 537 began at Jct SR 536 just west of Fredonia and headed north to Edison. At Edison, SR 537 turned right and headed east about a mile to Jct SR 11. In 1973, SR 536 from Fredonia west was redesignated as part of SR 20. In 1975, SR 537 was redesignated SR 237. Effective April 1, 1992, SR 237 was dropped from the state highway system.
Before 1964, SR 537 had been SSH 1C.
