When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in January 1964, SR began at Jct. US10/I-90 on the west side of Issaquah and headed southwesterly along Renton-Issaquah Rd to Renton. SR 900 overlapped I-405 for a short distance and then passed thru downtown Renton on the 2nd St/3rd St one-way couplet. From Renton, SR 900 headed northwesterly and northerly on Empire way, now named Martin Luther King Jr. Way. In Seattle, SR 900 continued northerly to Rainier Ave S, then northerly on Rainier to US 10/I-90 and ended.

In 1991, SR 900 from the Boeing Access Rd to I-90 was dropped from the state highway system by the state legislature. The law took effect on April 1, 1992. This administrative change may have actuations;;y required legislative change that was not undertaken.

Before 1964, SR 901 had been The Renton Branch of PSH 2
