Secondary State Highway 1V

SSH 1V was added to the state highway system in 1937. This route began at Jct PSH 1 (US 99/410) in Tacoma and headed via Browns Point and Dash Point to Jct PSH 1 (US 99) near Redondo Heights. SSH continued north for approximately 1 mile coincident with US 99, then left US 99 and headed northerly via Saltwater State Park to Downtown Des Moines. At Des Moines, SSH 1V ended at Jct SSH 1K.

In 1949, PSH 14 was extended from the then under construction Tacoma Narrows Bridge to Jct PSH 1 (US 99/410) about a mile south of Downtown Tacoma. The first mile or so of SSH 1V was transferred to PSH 14. When US 99 was moved from the Pacific Highway to I-5 between Fife and Midway in 1962, the portion of SSH 1V coincident with PSH 1 in the Redondo Heights area became simply SSH 1V.

When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in January 1964, SSH 1V became part of SR 509.
