SSH 1 Y was added to the state highway system in 1945. This route started at Jct PSH 1 (US 99) east of East Stanwood and headed west to Jct SSH 1E at East Stanwood. Stanwood and East Stanwood were separate cities at the time that have since merged. SSH 1Y continued west from Jct SSH 1E to Stanwood and Camano Island, ending at McEacherns Corner. 1963 legislation changed the wording but not the route of SSH 1Y. In 1964, SSH 1Y became signed as SR 532.
