Secondary State Highway 3J

SSH 3J was added to the state highway system in 1937. This route began at Jct PSH 3 (US 395) in Springdale and headed southerly, ending at the community of Long Lake on the south side of the Spokane River.

In 1957, PSH 3/US 395 was moved to a more direct alignment from Loon Lake to a point between Valley and Chewelah. This new route, not actually opened to traffic until around 1959, bypassed Springdale. SSH 3J was extended north along former PSH 3/US 395 via Valley to the junction with the new PSH 3/US 395 alignment.A branch of SSH 3J was extended east along former US 395 from Springdale to Loon Lake.

In 1963, SSH 3J was extended south from Long Lake to Jct PSH 2 (US 2) in Reardan. SSH 3J is now part of SR 231. The SSH 3J branch from Springdale to Loon Lake is now SR 292.
