SSH 5B was added to the state highway system in 1937. This route began at Jct PSH 5 in Downtown Auburn, headed easterly via Auburn-Black Diamond Rd, then NW via Kent-Black Diamond Rd, and ended at Jct SSH 5A (now SR-516) just west of Covington. SSH 5B was dropped from the state highway system in 1963.
