SSH 5E was added to the state highway system in 1937. This route began at Jct SSH 5G in Downtown Puyallup and headed southeasterly to Orting, then northeasterly, ending at Jct PSH 5 (now SR 165) a couple of miles south of Buckley. When the state highway system was renumbered, SSH 5E became SR 162.
A branch of SSH 5E was also added to the state highway system in 1937. This branch started at a junction with the SSH 5E trunk just east of Orting and headed south to Electron. The SSH 5E branch was dropped from the state highway system in 1955.
