SSH 12A was added to the state highway system in 1937. This route began at Jct PSH 12 (US 101) south of Seaview and headed north via Long Beach to Ocean Park. In 1963 the route description in state law was change to read as beginning at Jct PSH 12 at Seaview. When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in january 1964, this route became SR 103.
