Secondary State Highway 14A

SSH 14A was added to the state highway system in 1937. This route began at Jct PSH 14 southwest of Belfair (at what is now the intersection of SR 3 and SR 106) and headed southwesterly via Allyn to Jct PSH 9 (US 101) at Shelton.

In 1955 the route of SSH 14B was added to SSH 14A. The route description in state law was revised to describe one section of SSH 14A as beginning at Jct PSH 14 (SR 16) at Purdy and heading westerly to Allyn, then northwesterly to Jct PSH 21 near Belfair. The section of PSH 14 through Belfair was transferred to PSH 21 in 1955. The other section of SSH 14A was described as beginning at Jct SSH 14A near Allyn and heading southwesterly to Jct PSH 9 (US 101) at Shelton.

When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in January 1964, the Shelton to Belfair portion of SSH 14A became SR 3. The route from Allyn to Purdy became SR 302.
