SSH 16A was added to the state highway system in 1967 but was never posted as such. It was signed as a branch of SR 20 from the SW side of Okanogan via the downtowns of Okanogan and Omak to Jct US 97 on the NE side of Omak. A US 97 bypass of Omak and Okanogan was completed about the time that SSH 16A was designated as such. SSH 16A followed old US 97 through the two towns.
