The Art Of Paintball
Chapter One: Itendify Flaws In Yourself
Study human nature. Study human nature. Study human nature. If you don’t you
will repeat the same mistakes over and over and over and over until you loose your will to
go on and give up. If you keep getting shot in the back then you are probably not facing
your problem head on.
If you pay attention to your situation in every success and defeat then you will be
building a database to plan from. Maybe a journal or maybe your memory is enough of a
storage media to keep these life experiences from slipping away. But pay attention to every
situation which you encounter and analyze it, alone or with a group, to identify any
potential flaw which can be exploited.
When I dive in a bunker I first find a position which I am comfortable with which I
can look toward the enemy then withdraw back to safety. What part of that could be a
flaw? Why does it matter how I position myself in a bunker?
Close your eyes and picture yourself running up toward an enemy position. you
planned this ten meter sprint and have cover fire to suppress the enemy while you make
your move. Realistically, everybody on the field knows that you are going to dive into that
bunker. Then in about ten seconds you will poke your head out to see how much of the
enemy you can see. That is the study of human nature. It is a common method which we
all share. What if you didn’t do it the same every time? That is acting on a plan not
reacting to a situation.
Close your eyes and picture yourself again. You first noticed that when your
buddy shoots at the enemy he ducks for about three seconds then comes out shooting. So
you signal your buddy to fire at him while you run into the bunker because it should be
safe. You probably noticed this reaction because it is identical to your own. When you
receive fire do you duck then return fire to that enemy after he is through? If you notice
this as a pattern in your own actions then you have identified a trait in human nature which
you can use against your enemy.
What other traits do you share with the enemy. If you don’t recieve fire then do
you try to advance to the next positoin? That is called an ambush if the enemy knows this
about you. Do you know that about yourself? If you are getting an incredible amount of
resistance what do you do? Would you react the same in every situation? If you analyze
your own actions then identify the enemy doing the same given the same situation then you
are studying human nature.
Do you poke your head out to take a peak only to duck back when someone shoots
at you? What if you didn’t duck back? What if they missed you and now you have
controll of the field of fire? He will assume that you ducked and come back up to shoot at
you again. Pack is the sound that your single shot makes as you paint his mask from ten
meters away. You noticed him ducking and ran up on him; or maybe he noticed you
ducking.
Do you come out of the bunker in the same spot every time? Do you poke your
head up to look and then duck when they almost hit you? Do you then come back up in
the same spot? I never get a shot at that guy he has me pinned down!!!! Someone give me
some cover fire!!! Why don’t you observe what it is that you are doing and look at it from
a third party point of view? I bet you could come up with a plan for your own actions and
defeat your enemy.
It’s always easy to know what is best for a player on the field when you are
watching from the sidelines. You can easily be an expert when your not pumping half and
half adrenaline and testosterone through your veins. If you could have that same
detachment when you are the one in the bunker with three guys pinning you down would
you be more effective? That is how you study the situation and act out a plan. To coin an
old but accurate phrase, “Act, don’t react”
