The Art Of Paintball
Chapter Two: Transfer your deficiencies.
If you can study others actions you can study your own. By studying your own actions you need to detach from the situation and view it from a third party vista. This section of the series will concentrate on being critical of your own actions. Do not become depressed when you realize that you have a flaw. When I first recognized my own first flaw I would dwell on it and fall to it’s demise over and over again. That is not the purpose of this exercise. If you follow these procedures you should avoid this temporary down turn.
My flaw is my lack of blinding speed when trying to move into another position. My mind still judges the distance based upon a nineteen year old sprint not a thirty eight year old trudge. I would dwell on trying harder to make it to that bunker. Every time I would get tagged and subsequently get more depressed.
When I finally detached from the situation and could see myself not making it that far, I was able to devise another plan. I was able to see my own deficiencies in my actions and in other’s actions also. I had managed to view the field from above in my minds eye.
I spent time staying put in my safe place and looked at what I could easily do to advance the game without putting myself in dire striates. With practice I became able to do this as the game progressed instead of doing it as a separate action. A friend of mine who is very aggressive noticed that I had success without being “aggressive”. I commented that I had found my place in the game where I can contribute to the team effort in my own way.
By transferring my deficiencies to a journal I was able to identify my flaw and act out a plan. But I am getting into the next chapter with that. Study and commit to improving instead of being critical and detrimental. Be constructive with yourself as you would with one of your teammates. Just remember, it is still a game, have fun and you will improve.
