Ibizan Hound
Height 22.5-27.5 inches
Weight 45-55 lbs.
Life Span 12-14 yrs.
Overview Ibizan hounds are clean, well-mannered, and very loyal to their families, though sometimes reserved with strangers. They are playful with children, if socialized with them at an early age.

Obedience training usually goes well as long as the methods used are gentle. Ibizan hounds may chase small animals unless socialized with them when young.

They love playing with other dogs and may growl and click their teeth as part of this play. City life may be too confining for these dogs.

Appearance The Ibizan's coat may be smooth or wiry; the wire coat often includes a generous mustache. Coats are red or lion-colored (light yellowish red) with white feet, tail tip, chest, muzzle, and blaze; pied (equal parts red and white); solid white; or solid red. The nose is a rosy color.
Grooming & Exercise Ibizan hounds need only short weekly brushings. They require vigorous exercise, preferably in an area secured with high fences.
Origins This ancient breed was found depicted on the walls of Tutankhamen's tomb and is thought to have been bred as a hunting dog for the Egyptian pharaohs.

Centuries later it was brought to Spain by traders and named after the island of Ibiza.

Other Breed-related health concerns: axonal degeneration (a degeneration of cells in the nervous system that can lead to paralysis), deafness, bloat.
