Overview |
Afghans, like most sight hounds, are generally gentle dogs but are aloof and cautious with strangers. They are friendly with most other animals, although they may chase cats if not socialized with them early. They are very sensitive to strange noises. It is very important to socialize and obedience train these outstandingly graceful dogs from an early age. |
Appearance |
The long, flowing coat ranges in color from light and dark golden blond to black. Its texture is silky, except for the short hair on its back. |
Grooming & Exercise |
Afghans require daily brushing and combing. A daily dose of vigorous exercise, such as several brisk walks, and the opportunity to run freely in a fenced-in area several times a week are necessary to avoid behavioral problems. |
Origins |
This aristocratic dog is known in the West as a competitor in the show ring and as a fashionable companion, but its origins are more rugged and earthy.
It originated as a large-game hunting and falconing dog in the mountains of Afghanistan in the 17th century.
