Overview |
The clumber is an affectionate, gentle, easygoing dog, reserved but not nasty around strangers. This dog can be stubborn during training but responds to kindness and positive reinforcement. The clumber is good with children and gets along with other animals. |
Appearance |
The clumber's coat is dense, straight, flat, and soft, with moderate feathering on the ears, legs, and abdomen. Coat color is primarily white, with lemon or orange markings.
The head is massive, the nose large and square. The eyes are dark amber.

Grooming & Exercise |
The clumber spaniel requires daily brushing and ear cleaning. The hair on the bottom of the feet and the feathering should be trimmed occasionally.
This dog needs brisk daily walks but is otherwise not athletic--definitely not the choice for an owner who wants to take her dog jogging.
The clumber's enthusiasm is ignited by the scent of birds, although clumbers that are bred for show may be less inclined to pursue them.

Clumber spaniels were developed in England and France in the 19th century, possibly from basset hound and alpine spaniel stock, and were very popular for flushing and retrieving birds for hunters. |
