In 1848, after the death of his wife, he took his young family and immigrated to Brush Point, Illinois. Other families from Montreal, the Hennagirs, Congers, and the Van Blaricoms, also immigrated to Illinois as a group with James and his family. Then in 1870, this same group moved to Bradford, Iowa.
