ap Iorwerth, Llywelyn Fawr Prince of North Wales (b. , d. 11 Apr 1240)
Note: Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, (Llywelyn Fawr or Llywelyn the Great: 1173-1240) can justly be called the greatest of the medieval Welsh kings. By 1202, he had taken advantage of the quarrels of his uncles and had become ruler of the kingdom of Gwynedd. Further successes in Deheubarth, after the death of the Lord Rhys, and in Powys made him the most powerful of all the Welsh rulers, though it was Gruffudd ap Llwyelyn who is remembered as the only native monarch to rule over all of Wales. In 1205 he married King John of England's daughter, Joan, and helped his father-in-law in a campaign against King William of Scotland. By 1210 the situation had changed dramatically. John invaded Gwynedd, Llywelyn being forced to retreat to the mountainous areas to the West.
When John found himself embroiled in struggles with his Barons and the Pope, Llywelyn was able to reassert his authority in North Wales. In 1216, he presided over a Welsh Parliament at which he was acknowledged as overlord of all other native Welsh rulers, a position confirmed at the Peace of Worcester in 1218, by Henry III. The achievements of Llywelyn were many. Before he died in 1240 as a monk at Aberconwy monastery, he had inspired a revision of the Laws of Hywel Dda. His reorganization of the administrative machinery of Wales, his maintenance of cordial relations with the Pope and the English Church, and the bringing of an era of peace and prosperity to the territories under his control were all testaments to his remarkable diplomatic and military skills. It is no wonder that his achievements on behalf of his people were widely celebrated by Welsh poets.

Note: [JC.29] [Note: It has been suggested, on the basis of a statement in Dugdale's Monasticon Anglicanum (6:497), in which Llywelyn refers to a certain Walter Corbet as "frater Willielmi Corbet avunculi mei", that Llywelyn's mother was a Corbet.(See, for example, Meisel's Barons of the Welsh Frontier, which, however, does not even mention the Welsh version of Llywelyn's maternity in JC.) However, as the source of JC.29 appears to have been written during Llywelyn's lifetime, and there are others ways in which an uncle-nephew relationship between William Corbet (an obscure individual) and Llywelyn could be explained, there seems to be no good reason to reject the statement of JC.29 regarding the identity of Llywelyn's mother.]

, St David I of Scotland King of Scotland (b. Abt 1080, d. 24 May 1153)
Note: Born 1084; died at Carlisle, Scotland, on May 24, 1153.
Saint David was the son of King Malcolm III and Queen Saint Margaret of Scotland. He was sent to the Norman court in England in 1093. In 1113, he married Matilda, the widow of the earl of Northampton, thereby becoming earl himself, and added the title earl of Cumbria when his brother Alexander I became king. He waged a long war against King Stephen for the throne of England on behalf of his niece Matilda, but was defeated at Standard in 1138.
As King of Scotland from 1124, he was much more successful, ruling with firmness, justice, and charity. David established Norman law in Scotland, set up the office of chancellor, and began the feudal court. He also learned the spirit of Cistercian monks from Ailred of Rievaulx, who for a time was David's steward. Scottish monasticism began to flower from the start of David's reign and countless almshouses, leper-hospitals, and infirmaries were established.
The monasteries founded under David's patronage were superb architecturally as well as spiritually. The king refounded Melrose Abbey on the main road from Edinburgh to the south, and it remained one of the richest houses in Scotland. David also founded Jedburgh Abbey in 1138, filling it was monks from Beauvais in France. At Dundrennan in Dumfries and Galloway he founded in 1142 a splendid abbey and staffed it with Cistercians from Rievaulx. The monks were so well managed that they even started their own shipping line and traded from the Solway Firth less than two miles away.
David has never formally been canonized, though he is listed on both Protestant and Catholic calendars

, Henri I Roi de France (b. 4 May 1008, d. 4 Aug 1060)
Note: BIOGRAPHY: King of France from 1026 to 1060 whose reign was marked by struggles against rebellious vassals. The son of Robert II the Pious and grandson of Hugh Capet, founder of the Capetian dynasty, Henry was anointed king at Reims (1026) in his father's lifetime, following the death of his elder brother Hugh. His mother, Constance, however, favoured his younger brother Robert for the throne, and civil war broke out on King Robert II's death (1031). The younger Robert was given Burgundy in 1032, after Henry had sought refuge with Robert, Duke of Normandy. From 1033 to 1043 Henry struggled with his feudatories, notably Eudes of Blois and his brother Robert. In 1055, as the result of an agreement made by Robert II, the county of Sens came to the crown as the sole territorial gain of Henry's reign. Henry helped William (the future William I of England), Robert's successor as duke of Normandy, to quell his rebellious vassals at the Battle of Val-aux-Dunes (or Val-es-Dunes; 1047), but he was thereafter usually at war with him--a notable defeat for the king being that at Varaville (1058). Henry tried to resist papal interference but could not prevent Pope Leo IX from holding a council at Reims (1049). Philip, elder son of Henry's marriage to a Russian princess, was crowned in 1059.
