Joe was absolutely nothing like his mother, Mrs Mangel. He was an unreconstructed oaf who liked his beer, his betting and the status quo. He arrived in Erinsborough shortly before his mum married John Worthington, and when he realized he'd have a roof over his head and there were plenty of gardens that needed his green fingers, he decided to put down some roots of his own.

He already had one failed marriage behind him (which had given him his son Toby), when he fell for neighbour Kerry Bishop. It was a case of opposites attracting and, after considerable badgering, he got her to accept his marriage proposal. But just after Kerry had discovered she was pregnant she was killed in a shooting accident. His lodger, Melanie Pearson, helped him through his grief and the custody battle for Kerry's daughter, Sky, and in time they too fell for each other and Melanie became his third wife. They left for a honeymoon in England.
