Reparations

A very touchy subject for all Americans these days.
I am not so much against reparations,
as I am the way that they are done and distributed.
Below are some examples of how and why I feel as I do.

The Sand Creek Massacre of the Cheyennes

The 1864 Murder of more than 200 members
of the Chief Black Kettle Band of Cheyenne
by Colonel John M. Chivington
and his Colorado volunteer military group.
While the village was under the white flag of peace,
as per the instructions of the local military,
Chivington's troops attacked the village
with a blood thirst rarely seen in our history.
Of the estimated 200 killed
(the bodies were too mutilated to accurately count)
150 were woman and children.
Stories of the survivors and some of the troops themselves
speak of mutilation, extreme cruelty, and mayhem
wrought that day. One such story, tells of
a native woman who slit the throats of her
own children to spare them the torture of the troops.

What reparation is viable for such bravery?
For such inhumanity shown this village?
To whom should it be made?
Will the tossing of some coin
to the modern day Cheyenne right this wrong?
Can the lives of those killed
and the bravery of that single woman be bought?

Not in my opinion.
This wrong can never be righted.
The only honorable end to this story,
is that it never be forgotten, nor repeated.
President Clinton declared the Sand Creek Battle Site
a national memorial, what good does that do?
The land is now unusable by all.
Perhaps a better memorial to these people,
would be to use that land for a positive purpose.
Build a school, a cultural center,
something to change the attitudes of the people
and educate so no repeat can ever occur.
Staff it with the Cheyenne of today,
providing gainful employment
encouraging self sufficiency and pride.

=============================
Treaties made and not honored.

Need to be honored NOW or renegotiated
for the best interests of all involved.
Funds paid to the Native people for lands re taken once given,
should be paid to the tribe, not individuals.
Those funds should be earmarked by the tribe
to better the lives of all it's people.
Today's reservations should be a cultural haven.
Not impoverished welfare states.
Build clinics, education the people to staff them!
Create an environment of prosperity!
Hocking tobacco, fireworks, and crafts
is fine and dandy but should not be a nations claim to fame!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Game and Fishing Rights

Need to be honored. Popular or not.
If the specie in question is on the endangered list,
new arrangements need to be made to exchange the
species allowed, until such time as it is logical
to return to the old ways. BUT the hunt must be
done traditionally if it is afforded as a special
cultural right!

*************************************

I will not, and do not, accept blood money.
So Uncle Sam please send my reparation funds,
to the White Earth Reservation,
to be used
for rebuilding the lost society of my people.
I will and can take care of myself,
thank you!
