ECU Wire Harness Assembly

Now we will assemble the Gear wire harness with a female molex plug on one end and the other end spliced into the ECU wire harness and brake light harness.

You will need approximately 18" of cable or 9 18" pieces of wire. Crimp female molex pins on the wires of one end and insert them into the shell. You may want to mark the other end of each wire as you insert it into the shell.

Gear Wire Harness Plug (Female)

As viewed from rear of plug were wires are inserted

Remove the tray in the tail section to get at the ECU. Pull the ECU off the bottom. It is held in place by 4 small rubber tabs. Carefully cut away the black tape surrounding the wire harness. Remove the tape all the way from the ECU down the fender as far as you can reach.

Next separate out the gear and neutral wires from the rest. The gear wires are all toward one end of the inside plug of the ECU. The Neutral comes off the outside plug. There are two Light Green wires make sure you get the right one.
Gear Color A1 pin A2 pin
1st Green / Red 65 47
2nd Green / Blue 57 53
3rd Green / Yellow 66 60
4th Green 58 46
5th Green / White 67 52
6th Green / Black 68 59
Neutral Light Green 20 20
Once you've separated out the gear wires re-tape the wire harness leaving out the gear wires.
Use the squeeze tap connectors to splice the gear wire harness into the ECU harness. Do this as far away from the ECU as possible so that you can easily reinstall the tray. Also stagger the taps so when tapped up they take up less room.
Next connect the power wires into the tail / brake light harness. Tape up all of the Gear / Pwr harness

You can now plug in your circuit board and test your circuit. Once your happy with it you need to insulate the circuit board. Use a piece of left over radio shack part cardboard, folded and placed on the solder side, to prevent any sharp leads from penetrating the tape. Tape it up real good. Then go ahead and tape it some more.
Here a picture of the finished item. Tape up the rest of wire harness and anything that isn't moving. Tuck it up behind the brake light and your done with that part.
All that is left is to mount the display. Where you mount it will depend on its size and yours. I mounted it to just above the instrument cluster. If your taller and don't have an aftermarket windshield this may be a bad choice. If any one comes up with an interesting idea let me know.
This is a 0.3 inch display. This standard red display is not really bright enough to be seen in daylight. As I try different displays I will update this page.

Next will be a shift flasher circuit to flash the display at a preset RPM. The flasher is a separate circuit and can be use a regular shift light or in conjunction with this gear indicator. Stay Tuned....
