Balder - Norse God of the Sun

Balder was the beloved son of Frigg and Odin, the wonderful and handsome god of the sun. All the gods loved him, except for Loki the trickster god.

It is said, that the death of Balder would signal the fall of the gods, so it was Frigg who extracted a promise from everything on earth; the animals, plants, stones, seas, weapons, and insects to never harm Balder. All things promised, but the mistletoe was so young, that Frigg did not think it would be a problem.

The gods would play amongst themselves, finding great delight in throwing their weapons at Balder, knowing that it would not hurt him in the least. One day, Loki, went to Frigg disguised as an old woman, and found out Balder's weakness - the mistletoe.

Loki went and found a sprig of mistletoe and sharpened it into a small dart.  He then went and joined the other gods, who were again throwing their weapons at Balder. All the gods were throwing weapons at Balder, except for Hod, the blind god of winter.

Loki asked Hod why he did not throw a weapon at Balder, and Hod answered that it was because he was blind, and had no weapon to throw. Loki laughed and told Hod that he would provide him with a small twig and point him in the right
direction. He then gave Hod the small mistletoe spear and turned him to face Balder.

Hod let loose the mistletoe and it flew straight at Balder, just barely nicking him, and Balder fell, stone dead. In all the horror of the death of Balder, Loki managed to escape and he hid himself away.

Hermod, one of the gods went to Hel, to plead with the goddess of death to return Balder. She agreed, but on one condition: that everything on earth mourn Balder, then she would release Balder. But if even one thing did not mourn for him, Balder would remain dead until the Ragnarock.

So everything on earth mourned Balder, except for Loki, who had disguised himself as the giantess, Thokk. And so Balder remained dead. Loki was then punished for his trickery, and Hod was put to death, to be reborn along with his brother, Balder at the Ragnarock, when the world is born anew.
