The bible teaches that Yeshua haMashiach Himself was brought to the temple by His parents, as an infant of 8 days of age. This was not for the purpose of "infant baptism." Infant baptism is not taught in the holy scriptures. Baptism does however have a place in the life of the Messianic Jewish believer, when the individual is old enough to recognize that he or she is a sinner and has transgressed G-d's laws, (Sin is transgression of the law) then they must obey the holy scriptures, and repent and are baptized in water by immersion as the New Testament apostles taught, in Yeshua haMashiach's name. (Acts 2:38, Acts 8:12-13, Acts 8:13, Acts 8:38,39, Acts 9:18, 22:16, Acts 10:46-48, Acts 16:14, Acts 16:30-34, Acts 18:8, Acts 19:5, Romans 6: 3-5, Galatians 3:27, Colossians 2:12, 1 Peter 3:21)
-------------------------------------------------------
New Testament baptism is by "immersion." from the Greek word "BAPTIZO" meaning "immersion" and never is it translated as "RHANTIZO" meaning "to sprinkle" or "EKCHEO" "to pour." The significance is seen in the fact that it symbolizes a "burial, and resurrection." Sprinkling or pouring does not signify this truth in this way. "Therefore we are buried with Him (Messiah) by baptism into ; that like as Mashiach was raised up rom the , by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His , we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection. (Rom. 6:4-5) "Buried with Him in baptism, wherein also you are risen, with Him through the faith of the operation of G-d, who has raised Him from the . (Col. 2:12)
Baptism should be preceeded by repentance and faith. After Peters sermon on the Day of Pentecost, in which he preached: Repent, be baptized every one of you in the name of Yeshua haMashiach for the remission of sins and you will receive the gift of the Ruach haKodesh, for the promise is to you and to your children; and to all who are afar off, even as many as the Lord our G-d shall call..." (Acts 2:38) So then, those that received Peter's word were baptized; and that day were added about 3000 souls.
CONDITIONS FOR BAPTISM:
In preaching: "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Mashiach for the remission of sins and you will receive the gift of the Ruach haKodesh; the Apostle Peter was saying that repentance must preceed baptism. When Yeshua haMashiach said: he that believes and is baptized shall be saved; He showed man must believe to be saved. As the burial of the old life, baptism reveals that the repentant sinner has exercized faith in Yeshua haMashiach.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS:
1) Remission of sins:
Forgiveness of sins was made possible by Yeshua haMashiach's sacrifice. (Romans 3:5; 1 John 1:7, Rev. 1:5) Remission of sins becomes effective as the Apostle Peter taught in His Pentecost sermon, (Acts 2;18-38) through 1) Repentance 2) Faith 3) Baptism in the name of Yeshua haMashiach "And why tarry thou, arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. (Acts 22:16)
In 1 Cor. 10:1, 2, 11, the apostle speaks of this as a symbol of the "old nature" being buried, even as the Egyptians were all drowned in the sea. (Ex. 14:13-31) In our lives before we know Yeshua haMashiach as Sviour, we are like those heathen Egyptians spoken of. In Rev. both Egypt, as well as Sodom are used as a symbol of that "spiritual city" that exalts itself against God. (Rev. 11:8)
2) Entrance Into Christ:
Believers are "baptized INTO Messiah." This is an entering into and acknowledging allegiance to the very sphere of Messiah's authority. For He is King. Formerly we were citizens of a different monarchy; that of the Prince of darkness, who is haSatan.
But now, when we become citizens of that heavenly realm, we are clothed with Christ, having put on the Lord Yeshua haMashiach. "For as many of you as have been baptized into Messiah, have put on Mashiach." (Gal. 3;27) We are created in Yeshua haMashiach "unto good works."
For by Him, were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible; whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities or powers, all things were created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things and by Him all things consist. (Col. 1:16)
Colossians 3:9 says it this way: "Unto me., who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given; that I should preach among the Gentiles, the unsearchable riches of Messiah. And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery which from the beginning of the world, has been hid in God who created all things in Messiah. (Eph. 3:8-9)
One aquires a new standing before G-d in Messiah as "righteous" through the righteousness of Yeshua haMashiach, and a "joint heir together with Messiah." The individual who was at one time a sinner, becomes now a "believer, a branch, a member of Messiah's own body, a holy habitation or building of G-d, and a part of the church jointed to Mashiach as "his Bride." The building is placed on Yeshua hamashiach who is the foundation, (Ephesians 2:20-22) the branch is grafted into Messiah who is the True Vine, (john 15:1-5) As His body the believer is united with Messiah the Head, (Ephesians 1:22, 23) and as bride to Christ as our heavenly Bridegroom. (Ephesians 5:22-23)
We see the Ethiopian , who was an official in Queen Candance's palace immersed" by Philip. "He commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water; both Philip and the Eunuch; and he baptized him. (Acts 8:38,39) Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River; " to fulfill all righteousness " and as an example to us, but not to wash away sins as He had no sins. "And Yeshua when He was baptized went up straightway out of the water. " (Matt. 3:16)
