Reading Test Taking Strategies

Strategies:

• Before reading a passage, read the questions first.
• When asked to choose a definition for a word, scan the passage.
• Use caution when skimming a passage.
• Read for a purpose.
• If you can’t find the answer, move on.

Skimming can be a tool but hold caution to the author creating a trick. If the answer you choose is in the reading passage, make sure that it answers what the question asks. Many times, students think that they are choosing the correct answer just because they read this same sentence in the reading passage. Duke (2010), "Encourage Purposeful Reading, we constantly emphasize reading for purpose. We want our students to know why they're reading what they're reading - for pleasure? to find information? -- and to tailor their reading strategies accordingly” (No Pain, High Gain Standardized Test Preparation, para. 5).
