The Fireman

The burning flames around me,
There’s screaming everywhere.
The smell of charcoal fills my lungs,
As sirens fill the air.

My eldest daughter’s crying,
My youngest’s almost dead.
They both are badly wounded,
And lying on the bed.

The room is getting hotter,
Will help ever be here?
I’ve seen them out the window,
My heart is filled with fear.

If aid is not here quickly,
We three won’t be here long.
We’re trapped in this small, smoked filled room,
And hope is almost gone.

Then suddenly the window breaks,
And I can see his face,
I hand my children to this man,
I know time’s not to waste.

We all descend the ladder’s rungs,
Two carried, both alive.
The danger gone, my children safe,
I thank the man, and cry.
