Yule- falls around December 21 or 22. Also called Winter Solstice celebrates this Sabbat is about the rebirth of the God as he returns to bring warmth and fertility to the Earth. An Old Custom believed that lights and candles were used to lure him out of the womb of his mother. For this you could leave all the lights burning for the duration of this night. In one legend with this holiday it is said that the Oak King (of the waxing year) fights and supresses the Holly King (of the waning year) at this time. Witches see the Holly King as Father Christmas, wearing the colour of red with holly in his hat, driving a sleigh of eight (Sabbat) deer (symbols of the horned God). Witches envision the Yule tree as the "wish" tree, where all your wishes for the new year hang in the arms of the universe. While placing each ball on the tree make a wish. The pine tree represents the Goddess, because this tree does not die in the winter. Save a small part of the trunk for lighting next year's Yule fire. The larger portion of the trunk can be taken outside and pounded into the ground in a magick circle.
Imbolc- (also called Candlemas). This holiday falls either on February 1st or 2nd. In this ceremony we honor the Goddess and her recovery after giving birth to the God. Many Witches incorporate the Celtic Triple Goddess Brigid, who represents Fire, Water, Healing, Inspiration and Artistic Endeavors into their Imbolc rites. In some rituals, the High Priestess will wear a crown of lights to signify the Goddess' strength and her movement of the seasons into the light of the Spring and Summer months. Imbolc represents the first day of the Wiccan Spring. The Celtic God celebrated might be Lugh, the Solar God. The word "Candlemas" represents the many candles lit this night to signify the awakening of the Earth. Sometimes, Witches call Imbolc "The Festival of Light" The light of the candles corresponds to sympathtic magick, drawing the essence of the sun to the people. You can place a bowl of melted snow on the altar to speed the Spring seaon. The primary magickal tool of this Sabbat is candle magick.
Spring Equinox or Ostara- this Sabbat falls around March 21 or 22, known by Wiccans as Ostara (Oh-star-a). This holiday represents the return of fertility to the land. In some Wiccan traditions, for one week prior to this date, each Witch should take into account all the wrongs they have done to their families and friends. The individual writes down his or her negative acts and, throughout the week, must seek to create balance with those whom they have injured through apology, paying back past due loans, etc. On the night of the Sabbat the Witch brings the list, with what the Witch has done to Karmically right each problem, into the celebration. In ritual the Witch burns the paper, wiping clean his or her Karmic slate. Family celebrations could include the colouring of eggs.
Beltane- (Beel-teen) this holiday is celebrated on April 30 or May 1, opposite of Samhain. Witches consider this day the second greatest Sabbat of the eight Wiccan ceremonies. As Samhain is the celebration of death, Beltane rejoices the festival of rebirth. For celebrating this Sabbat find a pole of some sort and tie ribbons firmly to the top of the pole. Ribbons of white for the Goddess and ribbons of red for the God. When ready take a ribbon in your hand and dance around the pole weaving the ribons around. The red ribbons move clockwise and the white ones move counterclockwise. With the last few feet of ribbon every dancer goes clockwise to seal growth and prosperity intotheir lives for the coming season. The altar can be decorated with flowers, stones with holes, hawthorn, or anything made in the winter season.
Summer Solstice- this Sabbat happens around June 21 or 22. This is the holiday when Witches celebrate the strength of the God. This is the day when the God reaches his highest. This is another bale fire holiday, this is one where you can include the nine traditional woods to start the fire. As with Yule, the Oak and Holly king fight again, this time the Holly king wins and stays until Yule. At this time Witches usually make solar amulets, as all plants are at their magickal peak. This is the day to harvest your herbs. Pets and familiars are brought in the circle to be blessed and protected.
Lammas- this holiday falls on August 1. For this Sabbat the main God honored is Lugh. This is the first of the tree harvest Sabbats and third largest feast. This holiday gives thanks to Spirit for the richness of the Earth.Fo rthis Sabbat you can go on a picnic or hike, this is one of the days where it usually lasts all day. To decorate your altar you can use food from the fields, flowers, ribbons, etc.
Fall Equinox or Mabon- this happens around September 21 or 22. Mabon is the name of a Welsh God who symbolizes male fertilization. This holiday celebrates the ending of things or situations in your life. You also can use this Sabbat to honor the female dead of your family. Witcehs can make new wands at this time along with staves. This is the second fall harvest of the Wiccans. Altar decorations are pumpkins, autumn leaves, fruits of harvest, corn, etc.
Samhain- this is my absolutely most
favourite Sabbat of all. Samhain (Sow-in) takes place on October
31, also known as Halloween. It goes through to until November 11 depending
on your trad. Samhain is considered the Witch's New Year and the main Sabbat
of all. It is at this time that the veil between the worlds is the most
thin so contact with relatives or others who have passed on to the other
side is very easy. Samhain also celebrates the continualtion of life. This
is the third and final harvest celebration of the eight holidays. This
is also the largest as it is the turning of the wheel. At this time you
do not harvest anything. Altar decorations can be pumpkins, hay, gourds,
or anything that's related to the season. the cauldron is considered the
primary magickal tool for this Sabbat.
