The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park , designed and built after the war, was a memorial to the people who died in the atomic bomb. In addition, the aim of the Memorial Peace Park is to help bring about the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of world peace.
At one end of the large, green park was the atomic bomb dome. This was one of the few buildings that remained standing after the atomic bomb hit Hiroshima, although only the dome and some of the outer walls survived the blast. Most of the other city buildings were destroyed, along with an estimated 78,150 people who perished that day.
