Opposition to School
Why is it that we, as American teenagers, supposedly have freedom of speech when the only place we have freedom of speech is when we are together? When we are around teachers we don't really have freedom of speech, and even at home it's barely freedom of speech. Why does it matter if we express our views about a teacher or other student in a way that doesn't use insult, vulgarity, or violence? If school is supposed to teach us about the real world and how things are in the real world (as heard by various teachers) why can most of the teachers not even take criticism when they criticize us all the time? If teachers are beacons of intelligence, why do most of them have to argue with students even when they know they are wrong to feel superior? The few teachers out of the bunch that have inferiority complexes toward intelligent students bother me. Teachers are supposedly just trying to instill values and build character, but by being overly authoritarian, they cause us to rebel, thus causing us to not use the "values" they have taught us in the real world. They try to get us to act friendly and to apologize when we do something wrong. When in the real world people are not so friendly or apologetic. By forcing us to do certain things they are only creating a false image of the real world. By making us wear uniforms and ID cards, they are only stifling our individuality and creativity. But when asked, most teachers say it is the school board's fault, not theirs. When really they are the ones that are so hard on us about it. If uniforms are supposedly effective, why do we have so many people getting written up for dress code infringements. If you look at the numbers of write ups before uniforms and ID's and compare them to the number of write-ups now, you might be surprised. By making us wear uniforms, they are trying to make us behave, when truthfully they are just creating another way to discipline us. When someone finds a loophole in the dress code, they make a new rule to cover it up. If they are trying to teach us to be better people, and by teaching us that they are the "better people", then I most definitely do not want to be a better person. If they really want to teach us about the real world, why don't they let us dress how we want? If a bad situation arises from it, we work through it, because in the real world bad situations do arise, and that is not something they are preparing us for.
