This is lake Tarawera situated in Rotorua in the North Island. It is the North Islands 5th biggest lake and covers 39sq km. It was enlarged in 1886 when Mount Tarawera erupted covering the area with lava. It is said that the lake emptied at that time but  refilled a greater area immediately afterwards. The lake is 300m above sea level. Mount Tarawera stands between Lake Tarawera and Rotomahana.
