A pair of silver eyes appeared in the underbrush of Early Cretaceous plants. They stared intently at the large group of Iguanodon and Astrodon, who were bellowing and roaring. The eyes shift between each herbivore, looking for a weaker target; an injured or alone one.
The eyes belong to a young female Utahraptor, the Alpha female of a small clan who makes their home nearby. She moves quietly through the conifers and cycads, not making a sound. She sees the eyes of her clanmates nearby. They, too, were searching for a potential victim, yet they remained in the Alpha’s range of sight.
The female pauses momentarily as her eyes scan over a particularly large Iguanodon bull. She slinks forward, stopping at the edge of the trees. This one.. this male. He’s our victim.. Our prey. She silently chooses this lone Iguan, her body language telling the rest of the pack their target. Each of the five eyes nod once and begin to circle closer to the grazing male.
She waits patiently for everyone to take their position. She cocks her head in the direction of two pairs of eyes, who were staring back at her. She nodded.
The two ‘Raptors, a mated couple younger than the Alpha, darted from the underbrush and lunged out at the Iguan. The female hit his side, knocking him to the ground, while the other leaped onto his neck.
The Alpha female nods to two other pair of eyes. The youths, her oldest children from a brood last year, nodded back and ran towards the flailing, bellowing target, leaping next to the female on the Iguan’s torso. They both began to carve up their victim, using their hand claws and foot claws alike.
The Alpha nods to her mate, the Alpha male. They run from the underbrush and join the attack.
In five minutes the Iguan male is dead, his torso ripped open, organs showing through the skin.
The ‘Raptors jumped from the body and nodded to each other in congratulations. The Alpha female glanced over at the herd to make sure they weren’t about to attack them. But the herd moved away, only one pausing to look over at her dead mate before joining her herdmates.
The Alpha female smiles and turns to her packmates.
“Well done, everyone. Nira, Keyo, excellent work. You are accepted.”
The young ‘Raptor couple smiles at each other before bowing their heads.
“Thank you, Ceyro,” Nira says to the Alpha Female.
Ceyro bobs her head once before walking to the carcass. She plunges her long, red snout into one of the wounds and pulls out a warm hunk of dino innards. She gulps it down before grabbing another. Her mate joins her.
When they have eaten their fill, they retreat a few yards and sit down next to each other. The rest of the pack move in to eat as Ceyro licks the blood off of her talons. When the pack is filled and their talons cleaned, the pack trots southwards, towards their caves. The landscape begins to steadily incline with each step they take until the forest shrinks away into cold, hard stone.
The caves come into view soon after. The Alphas and their two children trot into one while Nira and Keyo trot into the one next to theirs.
Once inside, another member bows to the Alphas. “Ma’am, your eggs are safe and warm.”
“Thank you, Recira. You may go back to your cave now.”
Recira bows again and retreats outside. Ceyro walks over to the nest of two eggs in the back of the cave and nudges each one with her snout. All are warm, and it seems they are going to hatch any day. She bumps her mate’s snout before curling around her nest and falling asleep.
The Alpha male looks over at his two older children.
“Kirar, Calilio, I want to thank you for helping in the hunt.”
“You’re welcome, Father,” Kirar says, bobbing his head.
“You two go to sleep. The sun is setting. Tomorrow we’re going to help your mother with your future siblings. It will be a long day.”
Kirar nodded and walked over to the opposite end of the cave, near the entrance. He lowered himself against the stone wall, Calilio settling next to him. They talked quietly for a few minutes before falling asleep.

_____________

The Alpha of a neighboring clan peered through the leaves at the caves. His amber eyes blinked as he evaluated the scene. He was also a Utahraptor, but he was of the Yellow-Snout species. These ‘Raptors were Red-Snouts.
A smaller ‘Raptor, a Green-Snouted Deinonychus, trotted up next to him. The Yellow-Snout glances sideways at her.
~Update?~ He said in Deinonychus tongue.
~Our pack is asleep. Your eggs hatched, Ytaris. Two males and a female.~
Ytaris smiled smugly. He was a father of three-will-be great warriors.
~Go back to the pack. I’ll be there momentarily.~
The Deiny nodded and trotted back to the pack’s temporary nest, two miles southwest of here. Ytaris scanned the area once more before turning and trotting away as well.

_____________

Kirar was the first to awaken the next morning. Calilio was the next one. Together, they trotted down to the hunting grounds and stuffed themselves, trotting back with meat in their jaws.
When they returned, both of their parents were huddled around the nest. They dropped the meat nearby and joined their parents.
The eggs were wiggling and cracking. The siblings huddled together and leaned closer.
The egg farthest to the right was the first to emerge from its shell. She was beautiful. Her body was green with brown tiger-like stripes down her body. Her eyes were emerald green and her crest was sapphire blue. She fell from her egg squealing.
“She’s beautiful,” Ceyro whispered, smiling happily. “What are we going to name her?”
The Alpha male, Arzic, thought for a while.
“How about… Tyrae?”
Ceyro smiled. “What a perfect name.”
Ceyro ripped off a few small chunks of meat and fed them individually to Tyrae. Soon she was full and asleep as her brother popped out of his egg.
He looked much like his sister. Bright blue eyes, green crest, dark green hide with a white underbelly.
“For him… Kihad?” Ceyro asked.
“Perfect,” Arzic said, smiling.
He fed him until he was asleep. Ceyro looked at Kirar and Calilio.
“You have a brother and sister now.”
Kirar smiled. His sister snuggled closer to him.

_____________

Ytaris and his large pack slinked through the underbrush towards Kirar’s pack’s caves. He nodded to them and they spread out, encircling the pack’s den. He moved forward, watching the four active ‘Raptors outside of the caves.
“Foolish Red Snouts. Wandering around on a day like this,” Ytaris muttered under his breath.
He watched as two younger ‘Raptors leaned against each other while they talked to the other two ‘Raptors. He could overhear a part of their conversation, and decided the young couple were new to the pack.
Ytaris looked around at his packmates. With a single nod, all of them bound from the bushes and attacked the unexpected ‘Raptors. The couple scrambled to their feet, only to hit the ground a few seconds later, a large gash across their throat, fear and surprise frozen in their lifeless eyes. The other two female ‘Raptors fought for a little while longer before they, too, hit the ground.
Kirar and his family, hearing the enraged battle cries of their packmates, rushed outside. They were greeted by the rival pack, over twenty Deinys and Yellow-Snouts, undaunted and full of energy. They stared at each other for a while, unsure of what to do. Finally, the leader in front of the ‘Raptors nodded his head and the pack attacked.
Kirar and his family fought ferociously as Ytaris walked calmly around the fight towards the Alpha’s cave. Ceyro, seeing him, fought like mad to reach him. Ytaris reached the caves before Ceyro reached him, though. As she ran as fast as she could towards the cave, high-pitched squeals could be heard inside. She ran in, only to see Tyrae be pulled apart by the Yellow-Snout, Kihad already lay in several pieces in the nest.
The sight sent Ceyro into a stage of insanity. She screeched loudly and ran for him, her arms flailing, her crest sticking out at a ninety-degree angle from her head in a full-display threat. Ytaris turned, alarmed, and got slashed across the snout be Ceyro’s foreclaws. He uttered a low growl and leaped on her, catching her throat with his killer claw. She hit the ground next to her nest, the enraged glare frozen in her eyes.
Outside, Kirar watched his father die. He and Calilio backed away, ready to run. As they turned, Kirar watched Calilio be grabbed by the ankle and pulled back. He heard her painful cries before he himself was picked up. Pain splattered his body before his world went black.

Rain hit his right eye, awakening him from his unconscious state. Pain hit his brain from every part of his body. He opened his eyes.
It was dark out. Dark clouds were scattered across the sky. As lightning flashed, Kirar’s eyes grew wide with fear. The battlescene unfolded.
Nira and Kiyo were thrown over low branches of a nearby conifer. Their blood was pooled beneath them. He saw his siblings’ bloody pieces scattered around near the cave entrance. His mother was near them. His father was next to him. He stood up and limped over to Calilio’s carcass. Her body was the saddest. She was beaten and sliced before the fatal blow was delivered. He sat next to her body for the next four hours. He was hurt both inside and out.
Then, he smelled something-the ‘Raptors that killed his family. He leaped painfully to his feet, but knew he couldn’t defeat them. He turned and limp-ran north, promising himself he would venge his family one day.
