Mr. Gajraj
has done the right thing
Dear Editor,
I would like to commend the Minister
of Home Affairs, Ronald Gajraj,
for taking action for libel against a television station. This has long been
overdue.
Television station owners think that they are immune from libel since the
PPP/Civic does not take anyone to court for defamation. Television stations get
off easily and so they can continue to publicly lie and slander people’s
characters.
In other countries, especially in the north, many television station owners here
would have faced heavy awards of damages for slandering the characters of
government officials.
Though many other countries have press freedom they have legislation in place to
control television stations and so save people from being defamed and slandered.
Others should emulate Mr. Gajraj and the broadcasters would be more careful.
Yours faithfully,
