Finishing touches on the bridge linking Guyana to its southern neighbour, Brazil, is expected to be completed in another few weeks.

The final span of the bridge was fitted last week, and according to officials
in Lethem, work is now being done to smooth the surface of the bridge and
install rails.
Work on the access road to the bridge on both sides is moving apace.

Last Friday, Guyanese officials met with their Brazilian counterparts at the
site, where several issues pertaining to the operation of the bridge and other
auxiliary matters were discussed.

Local officials, who included army Colonel Bruce Lovell, Police Assistant
Commissioner Paul Slowe, Traffic Chief Neil Semple and Ministry of Works road
construction official Walter Willis had all travelled to Lethem last weekend.
The team has also had a first-hand look at the complex, constructed on the
Guyana side, which will house the Immigration Department, a Police outpost as
well as a temporary detention centre for violators of the law.
